The name of Stray Haven originally came from my sister, Joyce, many years ago before I ever got into birds. I lived on a 4
corners in a remote country setting, and people thought it was a great place to "DUMP" their unwanted dogs. I was
the only occupied house on these 4 corners, so naturally the dogs gravitated to my home, and of course I took them in. My
sister came to visit one time and I had 7 dogs, only 2 were my own, the others were strays, when she saw them and I told her
the circumstances, she said you ought to call this place Stray Haven! Sooo, I did and the name stuck for all these many years,
and when I decided to go into the bird breeding business, I naturally named it Stray Haven Aviary. Locally I'm known as the
bird lady of Galway. I have been blessed these many years to have had many birds in my care and have loved the experience
of hatching and raising many baby birds over the years, from little parakeets, lovebirds, nandays, CAG, TAG, cockatiels, cockatoos
and lories. I handfed all the babies. My days of breeding are over now, but I still have my pet birds, and some of my babies
have come home to roost so to speak, when their owners can no longer keep them for one reason or another, which I take back
gladly & care for. One little Sun Conure came to me because her elderly owner developed Alzhiemer's, and could not care
for her any longer, she was a personal friend & I knew and got along well with "Peaches", so I took her in and
she is still with me at some 28 years old! See her on my "In By Gone Days" page. So, now you know a little about
what I am about, I hope you will feel safe with my looking after your feathered loved ones. Thanks for reading, my mini auto-biography!
Please check out my NEW page, "In bygone days" to learn a little more about what I am all about.
This is a picture of my Taxi bird, she turned 1 yr. old in August. She was hatched here at Stray Haven. Her father is
named Liberty, her mother is Pinia. Liberty is the first Timneh African Grey I ever hatched here at Stray Haven & I kept
him. He is the smartest bird and talker & knows what he is saying! Pinia the mother is a wild caught bird and not tame.
She is a wonderful mother as far as brooding the baby & keeping it warm, but for some reason never learned how to feed
her babies except for water. Soooo, Taxi was raised by me from the egg, I would take her out of the nest, feed her, put her
back with mommy so she could keep her warm for a few days, then took her out permanently to be hand fed/raised to weaning.
She was named Taxi, because I was going to sell her to pay my 'taxes'. That didn't happen & I still have this beautiful
bird in my home. She is a delight & my pride & joy!
Pictures above and to the right are from Nov. of 2006, when Taxi was 3 months old.
Update on the Taxi bird, she found a great home finally, on Christmas Day 2007, her new home is in of all places: "Liberty"
NY, same name town as her Daddy! I was so pleased to see her finally get a forever home with a nice lady named Rhonda &
her family!
